Qubulus releases indoor positioning app Salamander for the Android Market
New service Salamander enables you to create indoor positioning for your favorite indoor areas yourself
02 SEPTEMBER 2010, MALMö, SWEDEN
SummarySalamander is the first in a series of applications that Qubulus will release under its LocLizard label and is part of a wider research project on indoor positioning. The application itself is a simplified example of what can be done with the patented Qubulus technology. It is made available to give those who want to learn more the opportunity to play around with it.
In recent years location-based services (LBS) have skyrocketed and grown into a mature market that is ever expanding. Most of the growth was ignited by the introduction of popular GPS and later A-GPS enabled smartphones. As both solutions often fail to provide accurate and reliable positioning indoors, despite improved chips and new triangulation methods, LBS fall back on alternative methods like manual check-ins to position users indoors.
Qubulus is ready to provide the industry with a new way to position mobile devices and releases the Salamander application as a simplified example of what can be done with its patented technology. Ants Maran, CEO and founder of Qubulus explains: "So far indoor positioning has focused too much on centralized cell ID and Wi-Fi technology, instead Qubulus uses crowd sourced activities to offer free indoor positioning with better accuracy to any developer, globally. "
The LocLizard label will provide consumers with free solutions to help them position themselves indoors and developers with free tools to position their users indoors. Developers who want to be informed on new releases of the Salamander application and newly released services can join the Qubulus Developers Network.
When you start Salamander for the first time you are asked to identify the areas you want to position yourself in. You can create an unlimited amount and as many types of indoor areas as you want, but they typically vary from event and living areas to stores and offices.
"Salamander is purely for entertainment, it shows you your position based on your own work put into the application. In our next release we take this a couple of steps further", says Maran.
Salamander is now freely available on the Android Market and also works with the new Galaxy Tab.
